Jilly: Why do I have this thing on my chest

Me: Your zipper?

Jilly: Yeah, my zipper. Why is it there?

Me: Because the doctor used it to get inside you to fix your heart.

Jilly: Well, I don't want it.

Me: Why?

Jilly: You don't have one.

Me: No, you are right, I don't have a scar like you.

Jilly: I don't like it. Noone else has it. I don't want it. I want to be like you, and daddy and Cocoa, and Haley and Buster and Charlie and Rooney.

Mikayla (who was listening from the couch) But Jilly, I like your scar. It makes you special.

Jilly: Well, I DON"T!!

Me: But Jilly, if you didn't have your scar then that would mean the doctor would not have been able to get inside of you to fix your heart and then you would be really sick all of the time.

Jilly: Oh..........like my heart inside my blood?

Me: yes

Jilly (quiet for a minute) : I would be sick like this- cough, cough, pant, pant, moan, groan?

Me: Yes

Jilly: Ok then, I guess I'll keep my zipper.

You don't know me, but I have stumbled across your blog by chance. That has got to be THE sweetest conversation I have heard. I have a little boy who has DORV and has undergone three major heart surgeries. I love it that you call it her zipper. My little guy is still too young to know that, but I think when he gets old enough to care what is on his chest, I will call it a zipper. It almost made me cry. I was searching on someone else's blog who had a huge list of heart friends, and I have been wanting to find someone else who has DORV and I stumbled across yours. I hope all is well. You can check out our blog, I haven't updated it about our little guy in a long time, but he is doing okay. Good luck and hope to keep in touch.

Jilly is just the sweetest...
and Mikayla....what a sweet sister she is. (I hope my big boys are that thoughtful when Isaac is older)

Those moments must just make you so proud...

That's a very sweet story. I wonder how it will be when my little guy asks about his zipper.

Hi,
I saw Jillian's name mentioned on The Funky Heart. Jillian can see my son Eli's zipper on my blog. Eli was originally diagnosed as DORV, but was changed at 5 months of age. His zipper is new-he still calls it his boo-boo. Thankfully, we were able to bypass the shunt, and they say there will be no need for the Fontan.

It's nice to 'meet' other heart families!

This story is so sweet. I too have a Jilliann ( with two n's) and we too call her Jilly, she too has a zipper- opened twice so far, another one planned for August. She is only two, so I suppose we will probably have the same conversation someday- I will remember your story. Heart hugs, Joy and Jilliann cp sillyjilly07
